Normally I’m not super into the booker picks. I love seeing the list each year but rarely want to read very many of the books. I’m very intrigued by 11 of them this year! I’ve got lots of library holds and am about to start my first one!

You really should read Orbital; I think you're being misled by the blurb. It's just over 200 pages and is filled with beautifully written passages. She really fleshes out the six characters with a sparse number of words as they adapt to living in space focus on their new jobs and reflect on their lives back on Earth. It's profound and silly at times, happy and sad, and filled with exquisite, lush writing. I really think that it's going to make the short list. Hard to imagine anyone not enjoying this book.

No Praiseworthy! I'm just sitting here...eating my hat...and disappointed in the judges decisions! I've read 4 on the list - My Friends is my favourite. James is great. Orbital was not for me and I love a Literary SciFi. Stoneyard Devotional is good but it's not even Charlotte Wood's best novel let alone the best coming out of Australia, sigh. I liked There There, it was really cleverly brought together, maybe I'll read Wandering Stars. I have the others already reserved at the library including Held, I read her Fugitive Pieces years ago, and thought it was excellent. I hope Held is as good. Anyway Happy Reading 🙂

I think Vivi's decision to stay was for the best, and also makes the most sense given what she is like. I think that the time in drum island was very important for her, there she saw not only a Kingdom that had a bad ruler, but also that was abandoned by their ruler, and the effect that had on the Kingdom and its people. Meanwhile Alabasta has just been through a civil war, and while the fire of the conflict has been put out by the rain that fell on that day, smoldering embers would remain. While circumstances aren't the exact same, Vivi leaving her country could be seen as her abandoning them when they need her most, and be no better than Wapol, she recognized that her people needed her and chose to dedicate herself to that as a monarch, or in this case heir, should. Her farewell was incredibly emotional, and years later still gets tears out of me, but I have the greatest respect for her and the decisions she made.

I’m excited about this list too! So happy to see James, Wandering Stars, Orbital and Held. I guahed about all four of these when I read them. (Shelly, start with There, There because otherwise Wandering Stars is spoilery.) Several books are already on my library holds list-Wild Houses, My Friends, Safekeep and This Strange Eventful History. Messud’s novel is a whole lot longer than Held, btw. Also, Held is written in a fragmented circuitous style, which I am guessing is quite different from Messud’s prose style. I’m quite curious about Headshot, even though boxing would not normally attract my interest. We shall see!

Powers and Kushner books not out until September. Happy to start in on this list, and my local library is only missing one on the list of already published books. Probably won’t read Headshot though, not interested in boxing which I find to be an accepted form of physical violence, so not for me. I plan on reading The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and There There before reading Everett and Orange on this list. I’ve read Overstory but not Bewilderment by Powers. Some people say Bewilderment is better and more of an intimate novel as it is told in the first person narrative. Intriguing list…thank you for your excited overview of this list! Happy reading.

I would like to add this book is called ' Giovanni's Room. ' Giovanni is the focus of the book, and his room is for David's sexual pleasure, and ultimately and symbolically his death cell.

  •  День назад

I have seen many people praise this gay novel, and it has taken years to do so. In my opinion it is also about how bisexuality can sometimes be extremely destructive. I would like more concentration on Giovanni. who is gay and why he is executed. To satisfy readers - especially in the 1950's - that a gay person must either be killed, or commits suicide or becomes ' straight. ' I am a gay man and look upon this book with very mixed feelings.

Shelly the Rebel, shopping book sales dressed in a chrome-studded leather jacket, I imagine. Looks like a good haul. As for my own reading, I just finished rereading a science fiction book I last read about forty years ago - _Time and Again_ (1951) by Clifford D. Simak. In 7990, Asher Sutton returns to Earth after being dead for twenty years, in a nonfunctioning, leaky spacecraft, and he plans to write a revelatory book that will impact the entire galaxy. Time travelers from his future are out to stop him. I had forgotten so much about this story, and I’m glad I reread it.

I suspect that I'll continue my reading for entertainment only with more urban fantasy and historical mysteries - Ilona Andrews and Deanna Raybourn. I'm currently reading a very good mystery by Jan Burke called Bloodlines from 2005. I recommend it whenever you get in the mood for a mystery. Thank you for sharing your wild rule breaking! 😂
